The show was in a way the antithesis of shows like The Cosby Show, which typically showed perfect families with a warm and loving patriarch. In fact, the show’s working title was Not The Cosbys in order to emphasize just how different the Bundys are.

When the show was at the peak of its popularity, Ed O’Neill’ would make phone calls to fans while in character. Fans would receive a call from Al Bundy wishing them a happy birthday. Ed was perfect for the role, but someone else well-known was actually up for the role as well.
