Upcycle This Cart Into An Elegant Kitchen Feature

Published on January 8, 2023
There are so many ways to upgrade a simple piece of furniture and totally transform it into a stylish and unique piece that will surely get you endless compliments, especially when people find out that you actually upgraded it yourself. The best part is that often it doesn’t take much to take a boring piece from Ikea and turn it into something that looks very luxurious. Here’s a great example: this Bekvam kitchen stand, which is very useful, can go from totally simple to absolutely elegant without a lot of work.

One user named Meg shared with Apartment Therapy her hack to turn the piece into a beautiful marble-topped mini kitchen island: “[It is] now sporting 2 coats of General Finishes Queenstown Gray with Miss Mustard Seed furniture wax topcoat. I have added a Carrara marble top to correspond with the island in the same thickness (makes the cart quite heavy but solid) We only removed the original wood paint splattered top and used PL Premium (in the caulking aisle) to attach it. For you local readers, we had the marble cut and honed at a fabricator in Welland called Granite Innovations. I have used them for all my stone work (they know me by name now lol) I also painted the rubber on the wheels to get rid of the 2 tone with Annie Sloan graphite and clear wax. All my favourite paints are supported here!”

Blogger Shiny Black Door shared this easy hack that totally transforms the cart into something totally different. The blog highlights the fact that it comes as untreated wood, so it makes it super easy to paint. The top block can be coated with wood varnish to make it look more elevated. In a snap, you can have this beautiful and elegant piece in your kitchen too.

Another fantastic idea comes from Shelterness, which gives the idea of actually combining two of these carts together to create more of a kitchen island effect, at a fraction of the cost of an actual island. You can also layer up with these DIY ideas to get incredible results, like with this beautiful DIY kitchen island.
