TikToker Amanda Kay Sheppard posted a hack that involved using a dryer sheet in order to brush off and pick up any debris from the outside of the toilet before starting to clean and wash it. Her video has garnered over 7 million views and shows her wiping the toilet between the bowl and the tank and showing how much dust the dryer sheet picked up.
Hundreds of comments flooded the post, with viewers sharing that they tried the trick and how well it worked for them. Some others even shared more hacks that help them with this annoying task as well as others.
Dryer hacks absorb static, therefore trapping dust. These are so useful while doing laundry (obviously!) and cleaning, but realistically, they are a bit wasteful, since they’re a one-time use product that you just toss in the trash when you’re done.
If you’re looking for an alternative that will still make your life easier, first, you can try using the dryer sheets multiple times, which will in addition to being more eco-friendly and will also save you money.
For the best reusable alternative, you should try using a damp microfiber cloth instead of a dryer sheet, since the synthetic material has more fibers than regular cloth, so it is therefore more absorbent. Microfiber is positively charged, meaning it will pick up things that are negatively charged, aka dust and dirt. While they’re not perfect since they are still a cause of plastic pollution, they’re much better than using countless dryer sheets and throwing them out since you can reuse microfiber cloths.
To use it, dampen it, fold it into three, and run it along the dusty toilet. It will pick up the dust and shouldn’t spread it around. Rinse it out and continue as needed.
You can also use it to clean your kitchen (of course make sure to use different ones for each area) and even replace your paper towels with them. Get a pack and use them all around the house.
