Saving Up All Those Empty Jars? Here’s A Cute Idea For Upcycling Them

A lot of us save empty jars, whether from salsa, jam, or honey that we’ve finished, and too often, they end up piled up in a corner. While we don’t want to throw them out lest we be wasteful, many of us are at a loss as to what to actually do with them. In addition to using them for storing other food items, you can actually turn them into lovely home decor with this simple DIY project for making your own terrarium! So gather up your old jars and let’s get started.

What You Need

-empty jars, cleaned out well

-soil

-pebbles, potting charcoal

-plant

-wooden chopstick or plastic spoon

-funnel

-scissors

What To Do

To make your terrarium really interesting, select plants and foliage with a variety of textures, shapes, and heights. Make sure that what you choose can fit into your desired jar without touching the sides of the container.

You need to create a healthy foundation for your terrarium, since it does not have any drainage holes. This will depend on which plants you choose. Start with some gravel on the bottom of the jar or a layer of charcoal in order to make sure the soil stays fresh.

Add in a layer of moss before adding in the soil. Make sure you keep the soil level low enough to be able to allow the plants to have enough space to grow. This will also depend on the size of your jar, so try to eyeball it. You can add the soil into the jar using a funnel in order to help avoid a mess.

Try to plan out where you’ll place each of your plants before starting, and when you do, make sure everything will have ample space to grow. When your soil is ready, make an indentation with a spoon or chopstick. If there are any yellow leaves, trim them and place the plant’s root into the soil. Make sure you brush off any extra soil on the root before planting it in order to help.

After you’ve planted the roots, pat the soil around the plant using the back of the spoon. Now comes the fun part, decorating! You can add figurines, small rocks, and anything else you want to make the terrarium your own. Make sure you water it.
