Anyone who is living in a small space knows that every square inch makes a big difference, so when the holidays come around and you see everyone on social media bringing a Christmas tree home, you wonder if you can somehow squeeze one into your tiny apartment or tiny house. Well, you don’t have to clear out half your things to do it, and Martha Stewart has just the idea for you.

Her solution is to go for a 2D tree instead. So what does that mean? On her official Instagram page, she suggests: “Skipping the standalone fresh (or faux) Christmas tree this year? Or simply don’t have the space? No worries — there are several alternatives to consider, instead.”

She continued: “Take this wall tree, for example. By hanging [horizontal] tiers of fresh pine swags in increasing lengths down a wall, you capture the ethos of this Christmastime symbol — without using up precious square footage.”

This simple DIY solution will instantly give your home the holiday cheer you’re looking for, without having to give up precious square footage in your home. You can use real or faux garland to accomplish the look, and you can do it in just an afternoon.

Use your hooks to plan out the shape of the tree you want to post on the wall. This is great because you can customize the size of the tree you want to put up on the wall. According to Martha’s website: “you’ll want greenery that looks full and healthy to further the illusion of a real tree.”

Once you hang the garland on the hooks, you can decorate them just as you would a normal tree. Add in ornaments and baubles to make it your own.

Best of all, you can add in this wall-hanging tree even if you have a regular tree as well. This is a great solution to add onto a porch or to another room in the house to make things extra festive.
