What You’ll Need:
Terra cotta pots, paint, paintbrushes in varying sizes and shapes, painter’s tape, and of course, plants. You can use any type of pot you choose, but terra cotta pots are very affordable and so you won’t feel bad if your pot doesn’t come out exactly how you wanted it to. You can always try again. They’re also very easy to find at local craft stores and nurseries.
Plan out your design and think of what you want the final product to look like. If you’re really serious, you can even sketch out your design on a piece of paper or a sketchbook before even touching any paint. Practice makes perfect!
If you want to make sure your lines are perfectly straight and crisp, this is when you want to put your painter’s tape on the terra cotta pot. Place the tape however you want in order to fit your design. Make sure it is fully adhered to the pot.
This is when the fun begins! Start painting your pot any way your heart desires. You can paint it all in one color or add small designs. Transform the terra cotta pot into a totally different look, or accentuate its natural orange-brown color with polka dots, zig-zags, or anything in between.
If you want to overlap colors with one neutral color along with dark ones, make sure you start with a layer of the neutral paint first, wait until it fully dries, and then layer with the darker paint.
For example, if you want to paint on a leopard print design, start off with painting brown spots, allowing them to dry, and then adding on black dots on one side.
Make sure that your pots have drainage holes at the bottom so your plants can be watered properly and keep them healthy!
